University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE)

University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was established in 1917, under the name Government Engineering College, by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It is the 5th Engineering College to be established in the country and the 1st in Karnataka. UVCE is one of the few technical institutions in the country that is vested with the status of a University and Autonomy on the lines of IITs.

In 1917, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the then Diwan of Mysore, felt the need to have an Engineering College in the State as the College of Engineering, Guindy and College of Engineering, Pune were unable to accommodate enough students from Mysore State. He started the college in 1917 in Bangalore as a School of Engineering with 20 students in Civil and Mechanical Engineering branches in the PWD building. S V Setty was a founding professor. In 1965, the name of the college was changed to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), after the founder. For the first time in India, a department of Electrical Engineering was established in UVCE in 1921. Mr B. Muthuraman has been appointed as the first Chairman of the Board of Governors at UVCE.

Situated at KR Circle in a greenery filled scenic expanse of 15 acres, UVCE is in the neighborhood of heavenly Cubbon Park and at an arm’s distance are some of the most important locations like Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka High Court and City Civil Court. The City campus currently houses the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication and Computer Science Engineering. Proximity to the Metro, City Bus Station and Railway Station connects one easily to any part of the city and helps in commutation to UVCE.

UVCE was granted autonomy by a bill tabled in Karnataka assembly and now it is an autonomous institution with effect from 25 March 2022 with the UVCE Act 2021. Currently the University is affiliated to Bangalore University.  The college is approved by the AICTE and the Government of Karnataka. UVCE has secured an NAAC accreditation score of 3.75 (A++ Grade) and also secured an NIRF ranking of 64 in 2022. The college used to receive financial aid from the World Bank under the TEQIP program project for the improvement of the quality of technical education through various programs and infrastructural developments.

UVCE is one of the oldest Technical Institutions in the country, imparting UG, PG and Doctoral programs leading to BE (7 disciplines), B.Arch, ME (5 disciplines), M.Arch, GOI, PhD (Full Time/Part Time) degrees in the various disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. Candidates who qualify in the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) / Aptitude test conducted by the Government of Karnataka are eligible for admission to the Undergraduate Engineering / Architecture courses. Candidates belonging to Union Territories / other states are also admitted to the college under the Central Government quota. Candidates who qualify through GATE and PGCET are eligible to the Post Graduate programs. Candidates who qualify in the test conducted by Bangalore University are eligible for Research programs leading to ME and PhD programs. Admission to UVCE is strictly done on the basis of merit.

University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering offers all the necessary facilities required by students, faculty and staff. Some of the facilities are spacious Classrooms, separate boys & girls Hostel, Auditorium, Hospital, Library, Cafeteria, Gym, Shuttle Service, Sports Complex, Laboratories and IT Infrastructure, etc. The college organises many technical and non - technical activities evenly spread throughout the year. The ever active students are teamed to nurture various special interest groups in college to foster their technical and creative skill sets on a myriad of platforms whilst helping each other.
