Free College Education Scheme Announced Under University of Madras: Eligible Students Can Study Without Paying Fees: In a major relief for economically disadvantaged students, the University of Madras has introduced a free education scheme allowing eligible candidates to pursue undergraduate degrees without paying any tuition fees. The initiative applies to colleges affiliated with the university across Chennai and nearby regions.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

Under this scheme:

  • Students can study completely free of cost for their entire undergraduate course (typically 3 years).

  • Each affiliated college will reserve 3 seats specifically for this scheme.

  • The free seats are distributed across three categories, ensuring inclusivity.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must meet the following conditions:

  • Must have passed Class 12 (Higher Secondary)

  • Must have cleared the exam in a single attempt

  • Family annual income should be less than ₹3 lakh

Category-wise Seat Allocation

The 3 free seats in each college are divided as follows:

1.    Category 1

o   Orphaned students

o   Destitute / unsupported students

2.    Category 2

o   First-generation graduates

o   Persons with disabilities

o   Transgender candidates

3.    Category 3

o   Students who scored 75% or above in Class 12

Each category is allotted one seat per college, ensuring equal opportunity across different backgrounds.

Application Timeline

Eligible students can apply:

  • Within 15 days after the Class 12 results are announced

Documents Required

Applicants should keep the following ready:

  • Income Certificate (mandatory)

  • Class 12 mark sheet

  • Relevant certificates (if applicable):

    • Disability certificate

    • First-generation graduate proof

    • Other supporting documents
