IIT Madras Hosts Regional Workshop on Student Mental Wellbeing; Becomes India's First CFTI to Receive ISO Certification for Wellness Centre: IIT Madras Mental Wellbeing Initiative: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has successfully organised a two-day regional workshop on student mental wellbeing, bringing together faculty members, counsellors, administrators and higher education professionals from across South India to discuss strategies for strengthening mental health support systems in educational institutions.

The workshop was conducted under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) of the Ministry of Education and forms part of a nationwide effort to integrate student mental wellbeing into the higher education ecosystem. During the event, IIT Madras also achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) in India to receive an ISO certification for its Wellness Centre.

Workshop Focused on Strengthening Student Mental Health

The two-day regional workshop served as a platform for educators and student support professionals to exchange ideas, share best practices and develop effective strategies to improve the mental health and overall wellbeing of students in colleges and universities.

The initiative is part of a larger national programme aimed at creating stronger institutional support systems for students while promoting a healthier and more inclusive learning environment across higher education institutions.

Organised Under the Ministry of Education's Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme

The workshop was organised under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) of the Ministry of Education, which seeks to enhance the capabilities of teachers and educational institutions across the country.

It also aligns with the Government's broader objective of ensuring that student wellbeing becomes an integral component of higher education by encouraging institutions to adopt comprehensive mental health policies and support mechanisms.

IIT Madras Becomes First CFTI in India to Receive ISO Certification for Wellness Centre

One of the major highlights of the workshop was the announcement that the Wellness Centre at IIT Madrashas received ISO certification from TÜV NORD Group.

With this achievement, IIT Madras has become the first Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) in India to earn an internationally recognised certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management, reflecting the institute's commitment to maintaining high standards in student wellness and mental healthcare services.

The certification recognises the institute's systematic approach towards creating a safe, supportive and professionally managed environment for student wellbeing.

Initiative Based on Ministry of Education Committee Recommendations

The workshop follows the recommendations made by a Ministry of Education committee constituted to review the implementation of the National Student Wellbeing Framework.

The committee had recommended strengthening key areas such as:

  • Student mentoring systems

  • Academic guidance mechanisms

  • Institutional support services

  • Comprehensive mental health initiatives

  • Student counselling and wellbeing programmes

As part of implementing these recommendations, IIT Madras hosted one of the five regional workshopsbeing conducted across India to promote mental wellbeing as a core component of higher education.

Over 200 Participants from South India Attend the Workshop

The Southern Region workshop witnessed the participation of nearly 200 delegates representing universities and higher education institutions from across South India.

Participants included:

  • Faculty members

  • Professional counsellors

  • Hostel wardens

  • Academic administrators

  • Student support professionals

The diverse participation enabled meaningful discussions on building stronger student support systems and improving campus wellbeing initiatives.

Key Themes Discussed During the Workshop

The workshop featured extensive deliberations on several important aspects of student mental health and institutional wellbeing, including:

  • Stress-free learning environments

  • Student wellbeing policies

  • Institutional support systems

  • Building emotional resilience

  • Life skills development

  • Stress management techniques

  • Preventive mental healthcare

  • Healthy lifestyle practices

  • Promoting happiness and overall wellbeing on campuses

The discussions emphasised the importance of creating supportive academic environments where students can thrive both academically and personally.

By hosting the regional workshop and earning international recognition for its Wellness Centre, IIT Madras has reinforced its commitment to student welfare and holistic education.
