IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended Post Graduate Programme in Management (BPGP): A New Approach to MBA Learning for Working Professionals: BPGP, a 2-year MBA programme, combines strong academic depth with real-world relevance, helping participants develop robust managerial and leadership capabilities.

For many years, the conventional MBA followed a straightforward idea: professionals who wished to advance in management would step away from their jobs for two years to focus entirely on academic study. This approach suited an era when career paths were linear, job roles were limited to specific functions, and the main goal was to gain frameworks and credentials before returning to the workplace.

However, this assumption is now being reconsidered. For many professionals currently in the workforce, taking a break from their careers is neither easy nor attractive. Responsibilities, team commitments, and ongoing projects do not pause while someone pursues higher education. Moreover, leaving the workforce at a stage when careers are already progressing steadily can come with significant opportunity costs.

At the same time, managerial work itself has evolved considerably. Decision-making increasingly spans multiple functions, business environments are more uncertain, and leadership today requires navigating complexity rather than simply mastering expertise within a single domain.

These changes have encouraged institutions to rethink how management education is structured. Instead of being a separate phase that interrupts professional life, education is increasingly designed to run alongside it. One programme developed with this perspective is IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended Post Graduate Programme in Management (BPGP).

Extending the IIMA Classroom into the Workplace

BPGP is a two-year programme that culminates in an MBA degree. It is not designed as a simplified version of the full-time MBA but rather as an alternative delivery model that offers the same academic rigour to working professionals and entrepreneurs who wish to enhance their management and leadership skills without leaving their careers.

IIMA Director Prof. Bharat Bhasker has described the programme as part of the Institute’s broader effort to remain at the forefront of management education delivery. “BPGP provides a distinct edge to working professionals and entrepreneurs to fast-track their careers in today's dynamic environment,” he explains, highlighting the programme’s focus on accessibility while maintaining strong academic standards.

“The programme ensures that participants continue to draw on IIMA’s teaching and research ecosystem, case-based pedagogy and professional network, even as they remain fully engaged in their roles,” he adds.

Learning Based on Real Business Contexts

The learning philosophy of BPGP reflects changing expectations from organizational leaders. As professional roles expand in scope, the key challenge is no longer limited to applying technical knowledge. Leaders must interpret complex situations, balance competing priorities, and make informed, data-driven decisions quickly.

Prof. Joshy Jacob, Chairperson of BPGP, emphasizes this shift. According to him, the programme aims not only to strengthen core managerial skills but also to help participants develop the ability to think across functional boundaries and lead teams in rapidly changing environments.

“The intent is to move participants beyond siloed expertise towards a way of thinking that reflects how decisions are actually made in senior roles,” he says.

A central element of this approach is IIMA’s renowned case-based pedagogy. BPGP uses the Institute’s case method alongside lectures, simulations, projects, and peer-based experiential learning. Participants learn to evaluate complex business problems, apply management frameworks in real time, and generate practical insights through scenarios similar to those they encounter in their professional roles.

Curriculum Designed for Contemporary Leadership

The programme begins with a Pre-MBA module, which includes online, self-paced preparatory learning modules aimed at building essential foundations before the official start of the programme.

In the first year, students undertake core courses that establish a solid base in management fundamentals, analytics, and leadership.

During this phase, participants work towards building a deeper understanding of business, economic, and regulatory environments. They also learn how management concepts apply in real-world settings and gain actionable insights across different organizational functions.

In the second year, the programme shifts toward elective courses. Participants can select from advanced and specialised subjects across various management domains.

These electives include:

  • GenAI in Management

  • The Anatomy of Leading and Leadership

  • Managerial Applications of Game Theory

  • Elephants and Cheetahs: Systems, Strategy and Bottlenecks

  • Not for Sale: Psychology of Promotion

  • Carbon Finance

  • New Venture Financing

  • EdTech

  • Experimentation for Better Decisions

This stage enables participants to explore specific areas in greater depth while continuing to develop a broad managerial perspective.

Blended Learning Format for Busy Professionals

One of the most distinctive features of BPGP is its delivery structure, which is particularly suited for working professionals.

The programme is organised into six trimesters (terms) and follows a blended learning format. Approximately 80 per cent of the academic credits are delivered through live, synchronous digital sessions, while the remaining 20 per cent are completed through on-campus modules at IIM Ahmedabad.

The live online classes are conducted by faculty members and supported by VCnow, IIMA’s marketing and technology support partner for the programme. These sessions are scheduled during weekday evenings and weekends, enabling participants to manage their professional responsibilities while maintaining academic progress.

Each term also includes a one-week campus module, where participants come together at IIM Ahmedabad for intensive classroom discussions, collaborative group work, and deeper engagement with faculty and peers.

These in-person sessions help strengthen networking and engagement with the institute’s academic environment, while the online sessions ensure that learning continues smoothly alongside full-time work commitments.

Ideal Candidates for the Programme

Because much of the programme’s learning is centered on analyzing real-world business challenges, applying frameworks to practical situations, and engaging in case studies and collaborative projects, BPGP looks for candidates who can thrive in a demanding academic setting while continuing their professional roles.

Participants also benefit from learning alongside peers who bring varied professional experiences and perspectives to the classroom.

As Prof. Jacob explains, the programme is designed for individuals who bring “maturity, curiosity and ambition” into the learning environment and who aim to move into positions with greater leadership responsibility and long-term organisational impact.

Designed for the Next Stage of Professional Growth

Across industries, workplaces are being transformed by rapid technological developments, stronger interdependence between functions, and quicker decision-making cycles. As a result, the demand for structured learning has remained strong and, in many cases, has become even more important.

The key challenge for professionals today is identifying ways to pursue advanced education without disconnecting from the realities of their roles and responsibilities.

BPGP addresses this challenge by redefining how management education is delivered. The programme brings the same academic standards, teaching methods, and learning philosophy associated with IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA programmes into a format designed specifically for working executives—one that allows professional life and learning to progress simultaneously.

For professionals with a strong career trajectory marked by consistent growth, a minimum of three years of work experience, and a desire to develop structured approaches to solving complex problems, testing ideas, and improving decision-making at work, BPGP is designed to support the next phase of their career development.

Admissions are currently open for BPGP Batch 3 (2026–28). For details about eligibility criteria, the application process, and entrance test requirements, candidates can visit the official programme website.
