According to officials, these companies withdrew employment offers made to the graduating class of 2025, with some revocations happening months after acceptance and even just before the candidates were scheduled to join. IITs described the last-minute withdrawals as deeply damaging to students’ career prospects, emotional well-being, and financial stability. Consequently, they decided to exclude these organisations from the current placement cycle.
IIT placement teams stated that they attempted to help affected students by contacting the concerned companies and urging reconsideration but were unsuccessful due to the prolonged delay. The list of barred companies reportedly includes analytics, software, and tech-based firms, some of which rescinded multiple offers.
A senior IIT professor noted that the institutes have also begun emphasising greater participation by start-ups promoted under the Viksit Bharat initiative. The placement committees scrutinised company records and worked closely with 15 placement coordinators to verify claims of withdrawn offers. Officials mentioned that several firms had a history of revoking offer letters and delaying joining dates, which contributed to the decision.
Some companies had even retracted salary packages after issuing letters, creating significant psychological stress for the graduates. One student from IIT-Bombay reported that his offer was revoked mere days before his joining date, forcing him to seek alternative employment through alumni networks. Similar experiences were reported by other students from June to July, prompting IITs to take a stronger stance.
Faculty members added that while job markets may fluctuate, companies must maintain professionalism and adhere to commitments, especially when recruiting from premier campuses. The institutes reiterated that such actions severely disrupt students’ long-term planning and reduce trust in corporate hiring processes.
Officials confirmed that the ban would remain in force for the entire academic year, with further reviews scheduled based on company conduct and transparency.
