QS Subject Rankings 2026: How IIT Delhi Maintained Its Lead With 5 Subjects in Global Top 50: QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026: IIT Delhi has once again emerged as India’s top-performing institution, achieving a global rank of 36 in Engineering and Technology.

The newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 highlight India’s rising prominence in global higher education. This year, a total of 12 Indian institutions secured 27 positions within the top 50 worldwide across multiple subjects—more than twice the number recorded in 2024. This significant growth underlines how Indian universities are increasingly matching the standards of leading institutions in developed nations, particularly in terms of academic quality and research output.

Among all, IIT Delhi delivered the most impressive performance, with five of its engineering streams ranking among the top 50 globally. The institute stood out as India’s best-performing university, securing the 36th position worldwide in Engineering and Technology. Its five major disciplines—Electrical (36), Mechanical (44), Computer Science (45), Chemical (48), and Civil Engineering (50)—all earned spots within the global top 50.

Looking back at 2025, IIT Delhi held the 26th global position in engineering, while Indian School of Mines (ISM) University ranked 20th globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering. In the same year, IIT Delhi’s subject-wise positions were Electrical (47), Mechanical (61), Computer Science (64), Chemical (93), and Civil Engineering (51–100).

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. P.M.V Subbarao, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, stated, “The rise in rankings reflects our consistent dedication to engineering excellence. At our core, we have continued strengthening our fundamentals while also advancing AI-driven technologies. This assures us that we are progressing in the right direction, and rankings naturally follow meaningful work.”

Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, added, “While rankings may not fully capture the breadth of our efforts, they certainly recognize the hard work and commitment invested by the institution.”

At the same time, IIT Bombay also showcased strong performance, achieving 36th rank globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering. The institute was ranked 28th in Engineering with a score of 82.3 and secured the 192nd position in the Arts category.

Management And Other Categories

IIM Ahmedabad created a milestone by attaining a global rank of 21st in the newly introduced subject of Marketing. Impressively, 44% of India’s entries improved their rankings this year, the highest rate of progress among all major global education systems. Apart from engineering, Indian institutions have also delivered strong results in management and life sciences.

Further, IIM Bangalore (29) and IIM Kolkata (47) also secured positions within the global top 50.

Progress is also visible beyond the traditional engineering institutions. Jawaharlal Nehru University has maintained its 26th global position in Development Studies. Meanwhile, BITS Pilani climbed to 45th place in Pharmacy and Pharmacology. AIIMS Delhi improved its global ranking in Medicine to 105th, one of the highest positions ever achieved by an Indian medical institution.

India is currently leading globally in terms of improvement rate. As per QS data, 265 out of 599 Indian entries saw a rise in rankings. This 44% growth surpasses that of countries like the UK (40%), Germany (27%), and China (24%). India has now become the fourth most represented nation worldwide. A remarkable 65% surge in research output by Indian institutions, along with increasing trust from top global employers, has played a crucial role in this outstanding performance.
