IIT Madras Launches New Postgraduate Programmes in Emerging Tech Fields and Public Policy: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has unveiled a set of new postgraduate courses, including a Master of Arts (MA) in Public Policy and three Master of Technology (M.Tech) programmes in cutting-edge technology domains.

According to the institute, these programmes are designed to provide students with advanced interdisciplinary expertise and practical skills to tackle evolving challenges across governance, industry, and technology sectors.

The newly introduced programmes include:

1.    MA in Public Policy by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

2.    M.Tech in Semiconductor Materials Technology by the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

3.    M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with Specialisation in Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems (CEMS) by the Department of Mechanical Engineering

4.    M.Tech in Robotics by the Department of Engineering Design

As highlighted in an official press release, these programmes are intended to equip learners with comprehensive interdisciplinary knowledge and capabilities required to address emerging and complex issues in multiple domains.

V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, urged students from across the country to consider applying. He stated, “At IIT Madras, we continuously align our academic offerings with the evolving needs of industry and national priorities. This year, we are introducing four highly interdisciplinary programmes aimed at developing skilled professionals in these critical areas. These programmes are designed to blend modern technological tools with strong foundational engineering principles.”

The MA in Public Policy programme is structured to provide students with an in-depth understanding of how governments and institutions formulate and execute policies addressing complex socio-economic and political challenges. The curriculum spans diverse policy domains such as environment, education, healthcare, energy, transportation, and international relations. Students will build competencies in analytical thinking, governance systems, and policy evaluation, along with strengthening their communication and leadership skills. Graduates can explore career opportunities in government bodies, international agencies, non-profit organisations, advocacy groups, and the corporate sector.

The M.Tech in Semiconductor Materials Technology has been developed to support India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector. The programme offers focused training in semiconductor science and manufacturing processes, along with elective courses to enhance technical breadth. Students will gain exposure to the latest advancements in semiconductor materials, preparing them for roles in both industry and high-end research within this strategically important domain.

The M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with a specialisation in Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems is aimed at preparing engineers for innovation driven by simulation technologies. The programme integrates traditional mechanical engineering principles with advanced numerical techniques, machine learning, and high-performance computing. Students will acquire skills in finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, digital twin technologies, AI-enabled engineering, and large-scale simulations. This will enable them to design and optimise complex systems across industries such as energy, transportation, and advanced manufacturing.

The M.Tech in Robotics programme is designed to develop expertise in robotics and intelligent automation. It emphasises the design, analysis, and real-world application of advanced robotic systems across industrial and societal settings. The curriculum combines rigorous coursework with substantial project-based learning, providing hands-on experience with modern robotic systems in advanced laboratory environments. Graduates are expected to build careers in robotics, automation, autonomous systems, and advanced manufacturing, contributing to India’s expanding robotics innovation landscape.
