Madras Christian College (MCC) Introduces ‘Defer Semester’ Option from 2026–27 to Boost Innovation, Internships, and Holistic Learning Source: The Times of India (Chennai Edition, April 13, 2026): and experiential learning, Madras Christian College (MCC) has announced plans to introduce a ‘defer semester programme’ starting from the academic year 2026–27.


What is the Defer Semester Programme?

Under this proposed initiative, students will be allowed to temporarily defer one semesterin order to:

  • Pursue innovative projects

  • Take up internships in reputed industries

  • Participate in sports and other developmental activities

Importantly, students who opt for this programme will not face academic penalties.

Exam Flexibility Without Academic Loss

As per the proposal:

  • Students can appear for end-semester examinations later, in the subsequent semester.

  • All courses missed during the deferred semester can be completed without being marked as backlog or arrears.

This ensures that:

  • Academic records remain unaffected

  • The deferred period is treated as part of regular academic progression under official provisions

Paul Wilson, Principal of MCC, clarified:

“These courses will not be treated as backlogs or arrears in the student’s marksheet. Instead, they will be considered part of regular academic progression permitted under deferral provisions.”

Supporting Innovation and Entrepreneurship

MCC has already taken steps toward fostering innovation by launching the MCC-MRF Innovation Park, which focuses on:

  • Incubating start-ups

  • Promoting entrepreneurial thinking among students

Additionally, the institution has built academic partnerships with foreign universities, further enhancing global exposure opportunities.

Expanded Student Development Through Transcripts

Alongside this initiative, MCC is also strengthening its documentation of student growth by maintaining:

  • Co-curricular transcripts

  • Extracurricular transcripts

These records will capture:

  • Participation across a broad spectrum of activities

  • Learning experiences beyond formal coursework

A More Holistic Academic Profile

According to Sr Stella Mary, Principal of Stella Maris College:

“It will complement the academic transcript and capture the learning experiences occurring beyond formal coursework. It will provide a more comprehensive representation of a student’s development.”

Impact on Placements and Career Prospects

The initiative is expected to:

  • Enhance campus placement outcomes

  • Help recruiters gain a better understanding of candidates’ capabilities and interests

  • Encourage greater participation in developmental activities

Sr Stella Mary further added:

“It will improve campus placement prospects as recruiters get a better idea about the candidates and their pursuits. It will also increase students’ participation in developmental activities.”
