Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)
Established in 1889, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) is one of the premier Research Institutions dedicated to Livestock Research and Development of the region. Formerly known as Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory, it was renamed in 1925 as Imperial Veterinary Research Institute. The name of the institute was changed following independence to Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Administrative control of the institute is currently under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. The Deemed University status was conferred by UGC in 1983. IVRI is an Advanced Research Facility in the field of Veterinary Medicine and Allied branches. It has regional campuses at Mukteshwar, Bangalore, Palampur, Pune, Kolkata and Srinagar.
The scientific strength of the institute also contributed to establishment of some reputed institutes such as the Central Avian Research Institute (CARI) at Izatnagar in 1979 and the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory at Bhopal in 1998 (known as National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, since 2014). In 2015, the institute established the Training and Education Center at Pune, Maharashtra.
Indian Veterinary Research Institute is located at Izatnagar, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. The Institute is spread over an area of 440.50 acres and located at a distance of 258 km from New Delhi. It is about 8 km from Bareilly Junction, 6 km from Roadways Bus Depot and 1 km from Izatnagar Railway Station. Bareilly Airport is about 8 km away from the IVRI Izatnagar.
IVRI has been recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. The administrative control of the Institute is vested with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. The Institute has also been recognized as the Centre for Advanced Faculty Training in Animal Nutrition and Animal Physiology by ICAR, New Delhi. IVRI is one of the research institutions dedicated to livestock research and development of the region and an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Institution.
With the vast experience of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, the Deemed University imparts quality education at UG, PG, Diploma and Doctoral levels. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Veterinary Council of India (VCI) had given the responsibility to start undergraduate courses of Veterinary Sciences i.e. B.V.Sc.&A.H., the admission for which is made only on the basis of merit obtained in NEET (UG) examination for the year in which admissions are made, subject to fulfillment of the other criteria as laid down by Veterinary Council of India Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE) Regulations, 2016.
IVRI also awards PG Degrees and Doctoral programs in more than 20 disciplines of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Livestock Products Technology, Basic Sciences and Extension Education. Besides postgraduate degree courses, the institute has also been conducting various short-term National and International Training Programs, Short Courses and Summer Institutes to make the professionals familiar with latest developments in Veterinary and Animal Sciences. The institute offers diploma courses in veterinary preventive medicine, animal husbandry, veterinary biological products, animal reproduction, poultry husbandry, medicine and surgery, zoo and wild animal health care and management, meat and meat products technology. The institute undertakes basic, advanced and applied research through 98 externally funded projects. The institute also addresses the International Research Projects on Animal Health and Production Systems.
Indian Veterinary Research Institute has been attracting a large number of foreign students, especially from developing countries. The institute with faculty strength of more than 200(Mostly ICAR Scientists) has a major mandate of Research, Teaching, Consultancy and Technology Transfer Activities. IVRI has a Placement Cell and being the prestigious institute in the field of veterinary sciences the students get good offers easily.
The Referral Veterinary Polyclinic and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) provide treatment to livestock and pet owners and is an excellent platform for teaching purposes. The Wildlife Centre of the institute imparts education and training on wildlife health management and provides consultancy services to various State and Central organizations. The institute has also established the National Animal Science & Veterinary Educational Museum and a Mini Zoo for educational and recreational purposes. It has a well established National Library of Veterinary Sciences, Bioinformatics Centre, ARIS Cell, Animal and Fodder Farms for the benefit of its students and staff.
