The advent of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is the starting point of the renaissance in India. Swami Vivekananda, the illustrious disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, gave the first impetus to it by starting the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. The Mission is endeavouring to realise its aims through its various branches numbering more than two hundred in India and abroad. The Chennai branch is one of the oldest having been started in 1897. The Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College is a unit of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Chennai, which is a branch center of Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, West Bengal. It occupies a place of pre-eminence among the Educational Institutions of the Mission in India. On an auspicious day of 21st June 1946, Swami Kailashanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai ceremoniously inaugurated the College. In a public function held on 1st July 1946, the Professor, Philosopher, and President of India-to-be, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan dedicated the College to the cause of quality education with 20 teachers and 339 students.

Imbued with the spiritual ambience Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Chennai, through its all units, has been endeavouring for more than 75 years to impart man-making and character-building education as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda.

Here, every effort is aimed at developing a man’s life at various levels such as the physical, mental, intellectual, moral and spiritual. Such a simultaneous and harmonious all-round development helps an individual to attain the summum bonum of life — which is to realise the oneness of all existence. The College conducts special programmes such as Religion Classes and Swami Vivekananda Study Circle classes which aim at giving the students an insight into spirituality in its Universal Form as propounded by Sri Ramakrishna and practically illustrated by his own life and teachings.

The Digital Technology Center was instituted by RKM Vidyapith as a Digital service and Technology Innovation unit in 2009. It began as an ‘Internet Center’ providing internet connection to those within its physical boundaries. Library

The College Library has a collection of more than 93,000 books out of which 5000 books were donated by the luminary T. T. Krishnamachari, and the library has some rare collection. The Library subscribed to more than 80 national and international journals. The Library is being computerized.

As a step towards modernization, re-engineering of the collection available in the General Library has been carried out from 1st April 2009 and we have completed by October 2011.

The College is famed for producing finest sport persons in both National and International level in the past and present. The Department of Physical Education takes pride in effectively nurturing the sports talent in the students. Interest is inculcated in the young minds to take active part in sports activities at the University, Inter-University, National, International levels. Besides, Intramural sports are conducted to promote confidence, attitudinal expansion and personality development in the students. The Department provides all the requisite facilities to sportsmen for their training.

Sports Association

All the students and staff of the College shall be ipso facto members of the Athletic Association.

The activities of the association shall be managed by the Sports Committee consisting of the Principal and members. The College Physical Director is the ex-officio Secretary of the Association.

Facilities for the major games like Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey etc are provided by the Association.

The Associations arranges inter-class and inter-group tournaments within the College. It also participates in the various tournaments organized by external agencies and educational institutions.

A ‘sports meet’ is held every year in which both the present and the past students of the College participate.

MULTI-GYM

The gym has latest equipments aided by trainers and physiotherapists for guided exercise for students and staff.

ANTI WOMEN HARASSMENT CELL

As made mandatory by law an anti women harassment cell is functioning in University with a senior professor as Chairperson and other senior faculty members as members. The Cell is empowered to look into all forms of harassment against women and recommend appropriate sanctions.

ANTI-RAGGING CELL

As per Hon'ble Supreme Court's judgement the institute ensures a ragging free environment both inside the academic premises and hostels. An anti-ragging cells under the Chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) B.K. Sarap functions for the prevention of ragging in all its forms. Further, the Cell has senior faculty members as members who counsel the students to be aware of Hon'ble Supreme Court's judgement and how to abide by it.

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
