Government Law College, Tirunelveli was founded in 1996 to serve the needs of the people in the southernmost region of Tamil Nadu. It is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Initially, the college offered only the Three-Year Law course (Regular). Prof. A. Chandrasekaran, M.L., was appointed as the special officer responsible for overseeing the establishment and organizational setup of the law college in Tirunelveli. The college began its operations in the "Ponnusamy Pillai Bungalow," which was owned by the Department of Medical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. Starting from the academic year 1997-1998, the college became affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai. During the same academic year, the Three-Year Law course (Evening) was introduced. In October 2000, the college moved to its own premises, marking a significant milestone in its development.

Government Law College, Tirunelveli, commenced working from its own building from October 2000 on an area of 15 acres which is adjacent to the District Court Buildings on the Tiruchendur-Tuticorin High Road. Tirunelveli Railway Station is 1.2 Kms from the College, while the nearest Airport is Tuticorin, at a distance of 38 kms.
