History of the College :

The Government Law College, Tirunelveli was established to meet the requirements of the people of the Southern most part of Tamilnadu in 1996, it is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University. To begin with, the college prepared students only for the Three Year Law course (REGULAR)

Prof.A.Chandrasekaran,M.L., was appointed as special officer for completing the organizational arrangements in establishing the Law college at Thirunelveli.

The College started functioning at the “PONNUSAMY PILLAI BUNGALOW’ owned by the Department of Medical Education, Govt. of Tamilnadu.

From the Academic Year 1997 – 1998 the college is affiliated to T.N . Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai and during the same academic year three year law course ( EVENING) was introduced.

This college started functioning from October 2000 in its own building in an area of 15 acres which is adjacent to the District Court Buildings on the Tiruchendur-Tuticorin high road.

From the Academic year 1999-2000, three year Law course (Evening) was discontinued as directed by the Bar council of India and from the academic year 2000-2001 Five year integrated Law course was introduced.

As directed by the Bar council of India / Semester system has been introduced for both three and five year Law courses from the academic year 2002-2003.

The Year 2007 set another milestone in the history of this college when M.L.degree course in the Constitutional Law and Human rights law was started.

Government Law College, Tirunelveli started in the year 1996, affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai is a pioneer institution catering to the needs of the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu. It offers five year BA LL.B.  Integrated degree program, three year LL.B.  Degree program and two year LL.M. degree program in Constitutional Law and Human Rights.

Over the years, this institution has produced eminent jurists, erudite scholars, impeccable judges, socially responsible lawyers, intelligent academicians, politicians and bureaucrats with integrity. This institution boasts of a robust legal education system with law teachers of high caliber who dedicate themselves to the welfare of the students and are highly motivated to prepare our students for trans-national practice. Admission Procedure

Admission to 3 Year (B.L. ) / 5 Year (B.A. B.L.) Degree Course is based on Academic Merit through counseling.

ELIGIBILITY – 5 YEAR COURSE

Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination under 10+2 pattern with not less than 45% of marks which is recognized by the syndicate as equivalent to Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Tamil Nadu, are eligible for admission.
For S.C./S.T. candidates concession of 5% marks in the minimum of marks required for admission for B.L. 5 year Degree Course of study as prescribed in the regulations will be given.

ELIGIBILITY – 3 YEAR COURSE

Candidates who have passed a three year Degree Examination of Universities in Tamil Nadu and Such degree awarded by Member Universities of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi for purpose of mutual recognition on reciprocal basis, after 10+2+3+ or 11+1+3 pattern and also recognized by Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University alone are eligible for admission to B.L. (3 years) Degree Course.

ELIGIBILITY – P.G COURSE

A candidate who has passed the B.L. Degree Examination and has secured not less than 50% of the aggregate marks in all the Three Years of the Three Year B.L. Degree Course or in all Five Years of the Five Year B.L. Degree Course together, as the case may be, shall be eligible to apply for the M.L. Degree Course. However a relaxation of 5% is given to the candidates belong in to SC/ST communities.

Placements:

The placements at Government Law College are good. About 20 lakh is the highest whereas 8 lakh to 10 lakhs is the average. The companies that regularly visit the campus are Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB and Ernst and Young. The internships are not offered on campus and students need to work on it themselves.

Government Scholarships are provided to the eligible students according to G.O. Ms. No.310, Social Welfare dated 4.4.1977
