IIT Madras Introduces New UG, PG and Online Programmes for Academic Session 2026-27: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has announced a broad range of new undergraduate, postgraduate, online and web-enabled academic programmes for the 2026-27 academic year. The newly launched courses aim to provide students across India with opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary and future-focused education in rapidly evolving sectors.

The new academic offerings cover a wide spectrum of disciplines including Mathematics, Robotics, Semiconductor Materials Technology, Public Policy, Sustainable Engineering, Offshore and Maritime Engineering, Sports Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, among others.

These programmes have been designed to combine strong theoretical learning with industry-oriented applications in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantitative finance, semiconductor manufacturing, computational engineering, analytics, policy design and advanced manufacturing technologies.

Welcoming students to take advantage of the new learning opportunities, Prof. Prathap Haridoss said that the programmes reflect the changing requirements of industry, research and society. He added that the courses are intended to build strong academic foundations while equipping students with interdisciplinary and practical skills relevant to future careers. He also highlighted the institute’s efforts to expand flexible and web-enabled education models for learners across the country.

New B.S. Mathematics Programme Introduced

One of the major additions is a new four-year B.S. Programme in Mathematics launched by the Department of Mathematics at IIT Madras. The department is ranked 84 globally and No. 1 in India in Mathematics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The programme will also provide students with the option to continue for an additional year and graduate with a dual B.S.-M.S. degree.

The curriculum is designed to provide rigorous training in core mathematical concepts while allowing students to specialise in advanced and industry-relevant domains.

Students pursuing the programme will be able to choose electives in areas such as:

  • Cryptography

  • Computational Mathematics

  • Quantitative Finance

  • Financial Engineering

  • Actuarial Science

  • Data Analytics

  • AI-enabled Manufacturing

  • Quality Engineering

The programme also includes three Humanities electives and six free electives, enabling students to pursue minors in other disciplines and improve their prospects for employment, research and higher studies.

Focus on National Priorities and Emerging Industries

IIT Madras has also introduced several postgraduate programmes aligned with India’s growing focus on advanced technologies and strategic industries.

M.Tech in Semiconductor Materials Technology

The new M.Tech programme in Semiconductor Materials Technology is designed as an industry-oriented course focused on semiconductor materials, fabrication processes and nanomanufacturing techniques required for next-generation chip manufacturing.

The programme aims to prepare students for roles such as:

  • Process Engineers

  • Yield Enhancement Specialists

  • Materials Scientists

This initiative is expected to contribute to India’s efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing and technological self-reliance.

M.A. in Public Policy

The newly launched M.A. in Public Policy aims to provide students with deeper knowledge of governance, policy formulation and public administration across sectors including:

  • Healthcare

  • Education

  • Environment

  • Transportation

  • Finance

  • International Relations

Graduates of the programme can pursue careers in government institutions, public services, development organisations, policy consulting and the corporate sector.

The institute has also announced several additional academic programmes for 2026-27, including:

  • M.Tech in Robotics by the Department of Engineering Design

  • M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems

  • M.Sc. in Materials and Manufacturing

  • M.Sc. in Sustainable Engineering

  • M.Sc. in Offshore and Maritime Engineering

  • M.Sc. in Sports Analytics and AI

  • M.Tech programme in Electrical Engineering

  • M.Tech programme in Process Safety

  • B.S. in Aeronautics and Space Technology

  • B.S. in Management and Data Science

The introduction of these programmes reflects IIT Madras’ growing emphasis on interdisciplinary education, industry collaboration, digital learning and emerging technologies that align with the future needs of both industry and society.
