Expansion Details
According to officials, the new seat allocation includes 550 seats across eight private medical institutions and 100 seats in a newly established private medical college — Takshashila Medical College. This expansion was approved just before the commencement of Round 3, ensuring more opportunities for NEET UG-qualified candidates still seeking admission.
For Round 3 counselling, 1,105 MBBS seats are now available, distributed as follows:
- 118 seats in government colleges and hospitals
- 2 seats in the ESIC institution
- 576 seats in self-financing medical colleges, including 123 under the government quota
- 411 seats in private universities, including 163 under the government quota
Reservation and Quota Allocation
Out of the newly added 650 seats, 30 seats will be reserved for students from government schools under the 7.5% special quota. This raises the total number of government school quota seats to 650 this year.
The move underscores the state’s commitment to promoting equitable access to medical education while expanding opportunities through private-sector participation.
Counselling Schedule Adjustments
To accommodate the seat matrix update, the Selection Committee extended the choice-filling window till Saturday afternoon and allowed choice locking between 12 noon and 5 p.m. on Monday. This adjustment ensures that students can review and modify their college preferences based on the revised seat availability.
Students allotted seats under the All India Quota (AIQ) Round 3 who have joined their respective colleges will not be eligible for state quota counselling. However, those who were allotted but did not join in AIQ Round 3 can still participate in the Tamil Nadu state Round 3 process.
Broader Context and Implications
This addition of 650 MBBS seats comes as part of Tamil Nadu’s continued efforts to enhance medical education capacity. Earlier, the state had announced plans to expand its seat count, citing growing demand and improved institutional readiness.
The move also aligns with a broader national trend of medical seat expansion, as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently approved thousands of new MBBS seats across India to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and training.
For students yet to secure admission, this expansion offers a renewed opportunity to obtain a seat in either government or self-financing institutions. However, experts caution aspirants to remain attentive to fee structures, college facilities, and location while updating their preferences.
Key Takeaways for Students
