Tamil Nadu Simplifies MBBS/BDS Admission Process Under 7.5% Government School Quota; EMIS Verification to Replace Bonafide Certificates for Recent Batches: Chennai: In a major relief for government school students seeking admission to medical and dental courses, the Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME&R), Tamil Nadu, has revised the eligibility verification process for candidates applying under the 7.5% preferential reservation quota for government school students.

Under the updated guidelines, students who passed Class XII during the academic year 2022-23 and thereafter and are applying for admission under the 7.5% Government School Quota will no longer be required to submit a bonafide certificatealong with their applications. Instead, their eligibility will be verified electronically through the Education Management Information System (EMIS) database maintained by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department.

What Has Changed?

Previously, candidates seeking the benefit of the government school reservation quota were required to obtain and submit bonafide certificates issued by the concerned authorities to establish their eligibility.

However, the Selection Committee has now streamlined the process by introducing digital verification through EMIS records, thereby reducing paperwork and making the counselling process more efficient and transparent. The move is expected to benefit thousands of students who have completed their schooling in government institutions and are applying for MBBS and BDS admissions in the state.

Who Is Exempted from Submitting Bonafide Certificates?

According to the revised norms:

  • Students who passed Class XII in the academic year 2022-23 and subsequent years and are applying under the 7.5% preferential quota need not submit a bonafide certificate.

  • Their eligibility status will be verified directly through the EMIS database maintained by the School Education Department.

Who Must Still Submit Bonafide Certificates?

The relaxation does not apply to students who passed Class XII before the academic year 2022-23.

Candidates belonging to earlier batches must continue to:

  • Obtain a Bonafide Certificate from the Chief Educational Officer (CEO) of their respective districts.

  • Submit the certificate while applying under the 7.5% government school reservation category.

Authorities have also clarified that candidates who had already obtained bonafide certificates in previous years may continue using the same certificates and need not procure fresh ones.

About Tamil Nadu's 7.5% Government School Quota

Tamil Nadu introduced the 7.5% horizontal reservation for government school students to increase representation of economically and socially disadvantaged students in professional courses, particularly MBBS and BDS programmes.

The reservation is available to eligible students who have studied from Class VI to Class XII entirely in government schools and have qualified in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). The quota applies to seats in government medical colleges and government quota seats in private medical institutions as per state norms.

Importance of EMIS-Based Verification

The adoption of EMIS verification is expected to:

  • Reduce documentation burden on students.

  • Minimise errors and delays in certificate verification.

  • Ensure greater transparency and authenticity in determining eligibility.

  • Speed up the counselling and admission process for MBBS and BDS courses.
